Please allow either "always show all results" or "extend timeout"

The timeout for searches is way too fast.

I wouldn't want the UI to go unresponsive for multiple seconds, but right now I'd like to at least be able to have the choice to give it 1.5 seconds.

Or give it until I cancel.

There is no timeout. There's a limit on max search results returned, and if you want more, you can press the show all results button.
